Early in our grand-parenthood, we hit upon the idea of “Camp Grandmama and Grampy Campy” .
So….exactly what is Camp Grandmama and Grampy Campy you ask?
Well, it is a multi-day event (camp) with just us (and perhaps an uncle or two) and a group of our grand-children. I really take vacation time (as in…I don’t check e-mails or have any other agenda except the grand-children) and my husband and I spend the week just being part of their world. Wow. There is nothing like it. We talk and laugh and just get to know each other. They are with their cousins as well, so we get to watch those bonds get even closer.
Because kids like structure (or, at least I have convinced myself that they like structure, because I do), it made sense to organize the days so that we would all know what to look forward to on any given day. Plus, I just LOVE themes and spend untold hours finding just the right thing for the kids.
For eight years now, we have had CGGC (Camp Grandmama and Grampy Campy). We group the grand-children so that similar ages are together and delight in seeing how close they have all become as a result of CGGC. F0r 2011, we have two groups of three (a 9 year old camp and a 6/7 year old camp) and one group of two (2/3 year olds).
Each day is “themed” and we generally plan one recipe, one craft, one activity, one field trip and one book. The kids love it, we love it and the mommies and daddies love it too.
Our children have been after me for years to share what we have done, and now I am hoping that some of what we have done will help to inspire you as well.
I haven’t yet decided the best way to organize this, but for the time being, I am putting my day plans in the category – What Will We Do Today From there, you can pick your themed day. I’ll put the day plan, ideas, instructions and then follow up with a .pdf book you can download and print for your own “What Will We Do Today” day. I hope our experiences help to inspire you, and really hope to hear from you with your own ideas.
Here is the flag from our very first Camp, 8 years ago. I keep meaning to make a new flag, but….this will do for now….
This is a sample of what it looks like when the “campers” first come in the door. We start a book for them to collect pictures, mementoes, etc along with some necessary equipment for camp. It doesn’t need to be fancy, but you do want to make this an event, so spend a little time thinking of what they will see when they walk in the door.
Here is a picture of Carson, Luci and Kevin (all cousins) as they get ready to be taken to CGGC. They were just 3 years old at the time this picture was taken in 2007….but already very excited.
Each of them had a little lovey they brought with them to camp. So…shirts for the house…not bad for freehand.
R.J., Charlie and Ben in 2009. The theme that day was Native American Day. I haven’t posted that yet, but it is coming soon.
Cooper and Sophie came to CGGC for the first time in 2010. They do have their Camp t-shirts on under the coats, but …. well it was cold!!
So, keep visiting, and please let me know what you like and would like to see more of. I have SO many themes from CGGC already and so many new ideas, and I just can’t wait to share them with you.
